My G5 was damaged in shipping. There is a dent in in the stand, at the lower rear corner. The case and the cover no longer sit flush. The computer starts up and chimes, but stays locked on the Apple logo. Eventually the fans start blowing very hard.

In control-v mode, boot stops at "DART enabled", and the cursor locks up. I was able to boot into target firewire mode, so I know the drive is intact.

Questions:

1. I haven't noticed any damage to the visible parts of the logic board, but then again, I have no idea what to look for. I was going to remove the CPUs and inspect the concealed parts of the board, but then again...

2. How would an Apple tech isolate a hardware problem, beyond just looking at the hardware?

3. The dent is in the power-supply region. Stupid question: is it possible that the computer would still turn on if the power supply were damaged slightly, and would this explain anything?

4. How much should I expect to pay for a diagnostic at the Apple store?

I live in Manhattan; not too excited to lug a G5 on the subway, or take a cab.

Hmmmm, i will take a guess and say that your hard drive brooke when it got damaged. if that is the case, it should not be to hard/expensive to fix. A new hard drive goes any where from $65 to hundreds. you still have the Restore Cd's that came with the computer?
QUOTE Thanks
