Hey all! I'm a newbie to the forum, but a quick check back leads me to believe that this hasn't been mentioned / caught yet. I was looking over Macworld's bench tests of the new iMacs, and decided to nab the 20" 2.4 GHz one. I intend to do a lot of graphic design work on it, and for that kind of thing I'm satisfied with performance so far.

But one thing bugs me: I tried the UT2004 DEMO (NOT the full game, I don't have the Mac version), and the framerate was terrible. As in, sub 20. I have read that the 2600 Pro isn't stellar, but Macworld's benchmark quite clearly indicates that UT2004 should be running over 80 frames, and on a higher resolution than I was! What's the deal?

EDIT: Ok, you know what? Lock the thread, forget I mentioned it, and allow me a silent retreat to a corner. I feel like an idiot. Checking the Info for the demo revealed, magically, that it's designed for the PowerPC macs. If I had to guess, I'd say THAT is why it's running horribly.

Hello, JonEthan and welcome to Mac-Forums.

Nah it's fine, you are just picking up the Mac lingo and getting used to the Mac world so don't hit yourself over the head. In fact, I would say you're doing fine!

If the game is for PowerPC then this means the code has to be translated by Rosetta which I have heard slows down software significantly. Like for instance Intel-based Mac users running Adobe CS2 apps find it a bit unpleasant due to lack of speed.

So!... Make yourself comfy and enjoy the forum! Looking forward to see your contributions in here!

See, THAT's the sad part. I'm not really new to mac, I had nothing but macs up to the first iMac in '99, went on a temporary mac hiatus (during which I got UT2004 for XP, hence my lack of a mac copy) then returned a little over a year ago when I got my MacBook. I needed something for the heavier stuff, so I snagged the new iMac. The PPC - Intel crossover happened while I was away, so to speak, so sometimes things like PPC - Intel incompatibility doesn't click for me right away. Same thing happened for me with Descent, only then it was OS9 vs OSX.

Don't sweat it, you'll get used to it all over again in no time. I for one was pretty rattled when Apple decided to go with Intel! But I still go googly eyes over His Steveness' keynotes presentations.
