I own a 17" Core 2 Duo iMac that has 1 GB of RAM made up of 2 512 MB sticks. Can I replace one of these with a 2 GB stick and expect 2.5 GB of RAM?

To some it sounds like first grade math, but before I go off doing something stupid I would like to have some reassurance with a knowledgeable source.

Thanks!
