Hi People,

Have a question or two...

I have a 2.66 with the standard 250 hard drive. I want to add a 250-500 GB internal hard drive to this. I will use the drive at times for home video editing. There is so much hype and information out there on drives it is totally confusing and I do not know which way to jump.

If I get a larger than 250 drive I would like to use this as the core drive and install the OS on this IF it is faster. I know the 10k plus speed drives are fast and all but I don't have the coin for something like that at this time for the size I need. I am looking at something with a $175 or less price on it.

Can anyone suggest not only brand but model that they could recommend?

Help me find a good solution or compromise.

Thanks to all who respond in advance.

Clark

Personally I use Seagate drives in most of my systems I build. I also manage an IT department and we've had very good luck with Seagate drives. That's not to say they don't fail, they do, but service life seems to be very good.

With that said and in this case, one item to appreciate is the quietness of the Mac Pro. I tossed a 150gb Western Digital Raptor X into my Mac Pro and it is quite loud. I can't say the performance gains are worth the noise and I consider myself to be a technology geek with 8 x Seagate 750gb drives in RAID5 on an $800 Areca controller in my PC with 1gb of cache. If I were to buy a drive today for the Mac Pro, I'd stick with Western Digital and try to match the existing drive and/or model class to keep the noise down. Seagate drives in the newer releases are a bit louder and if you value silence, consider the WD. They are both good reliable drives. I've personally seen moer Western Digital drives fail in my time, but these days with them in many of our Dell systems at work, disk problems have been pretty much non-existent for the last 18 months.
