Got the new 8 core!

And thus far not too happy! I do a lot of video work using final cut pro and after effects. I did a little render test my 8 core vs my old g5 dual 2.3 and was very disappointed when my g5 render quicker. HOPEFULLY i need some setting adjustments? In final cut pro i really did feel like it was playing through video much quicker either. I will be contacting apple in the morning. :)

Power PC version of Final Cut? If so, it's running under Emulation (Rosetta) on the Intel Macs. That would explain what you are seeing.

you would need fcp 5.1 or 6 in order to see a difference in speed.

i am running fcp 5.1 on both soo i dont know. SO you are saying that the 8 core isnt going to speed up any rendering?

Is rendering the same sort of thing as converting say avi to MP4, or compressing DVDs to fit on one disk?

If it is, somethings up. My quad 2.66 will do that roughly 10 x as fast as my g5 single 1.8.

The quad has less RAM too.

I think Tiger has some multi-core problems. The best thing you can do is upgrade to Leopard when it comes out, as it will have a new way of handling multicore and you should see your rendering boom upto fast speeds.

Yeah, Leopard will handle it better :)

Did you migrate your old PPC install to the Intel machine? if so then you would be advised to wipe it and reinstall OSX.

Also, each core needs enough RAM. Each core should at least have 1GB to play with.
