anyone who owns a g5, or has info on this..please let me know...

i was wondering...i know osx allows for setting the speed of the processor to: automatic, highest, and reduced...

do these effect desktops? or are they specifically made for laptops to adjust battery useage?

and if i put it on highest, would it run with all the fans blowing like a bat out of hell? lol

I am pretty sure it's only for laptops. It'd be pretty weird if desktops had that feature since I don't know why anybody would want to reduce their processor speed and get no benefit from it.

I'm in your forums, writing sentences in a grammatically acceptable manner.

Applause! welcome to the Forums! As muso said- it would be really strange to slow the processor. -I always wondered why those really old PC had that turbo button, then someone told me about older apps that couldn't run at the higher speed

It's only on PowerBooks.

Question. Your desktop machine is plugged into the mains... why on earth would you want to slow it down?

I have a Dual system and I happen to think Photoshop is still a little slow at processing large image files. Some of which are billboard size, normally A0 or A1 x 12.

Wish they make a Faster proofer! Dam printer! Slow as my SE and it's only outputting postcard size prints.

That's rather stupid to say as for now there are no G5 laptops. Don't get me wrong but this option has nothing to do with the simmilar options in laptops for reserving battery power.
And is only available in G5 desktop systems. Not G3 nor G4.
And YES IT AFFECTS the performance of G5 making it faster (when it is set to Highest). But the noice from the fans gets extreme sometimes.
Test it and you will see.

The setting you speak of, is specifically and ONLY for G5 desktops. The reason it exists, is quite simple. In automatic mode, the idea is to lower the voltage going to the CPU (among other factors) to slow it down, so that A) You're consuming less power and B) Your system runs cooler, and consequently, quieter. Research has shown that setting it to automatic will increase the life of your G5, and won't slow you down. However, Apple has released a statement saying that some (read: only a few) video programs specifically need the highest setting turned on.

So, for most everybody in here, Automatic mode is best.

I also want to recommend that you use Google before posting questions like that...because you didn't get a single accurate answer, yet through Google I found a very detailed and interested document on the subject.
