    Specs:
    17 inch 2 GHz C2D imac (5,1) with 3GB DDR2 RAM, X1600 (128MB memory) GPU - OSX 10.6.3
    Transfering data imac to imac
I have a 333 Mhz imac. With only 2 USB ports. And I'm going to this week order a 17 inch intel imac.

And my question is what's the best way to transfer the data from the old imac to the new one? I have music files, Firefox bookmarks, general files, and apps, and other stuff I need to have transferred over. About 45 GB in total.

Will I have to re put in the registration codes for the apps I have on the new imac. I think I'll have to. Maybe reinstalling the ones I have on cd is a better option?

Would using the 30 GB ipod I have as a portable drive be the best option? It'd take ages as uploading 25+ gig to it though. Is there a better option to do this?

And is there any system info I'd need to transfer. The old imac has 10.3.9 and the new one I'm assuming 10.4.something.

    Thanks in advance.

    Specs:
    Mini C2D 2Ghz 8GB RAM, MB C2D 2.2Ghz, MBP CD 2Ghz, 1TB TC, 2 APX, iPhone 4, ATV2, 23in ACD x2
Does your old iMac have a Firewire port. If so just use the Migration Assistant and a 6 pin to 6 pin firewire cable. It (the assistant) should come up during the initial setup of the new machine. And no you shouldn't have registration codes to deal with.

The old imac doesn't have any firewire ports.

And can I use the Migration Assistant with USB?

Check the Migration FAQ I dont think you can tho, your best bet might be a to get an external enclosure with firewire and remove the old HD and just plug into the new machine.

Thanks, that might just be the best idea. Then I can put the Hard drive back in the old imac when I'm done with it. Good advice.

    Specs:
    ibook g4, imac 2ghz c2d, mbp 2.4ghz c2d - 10.5.1
try an external hd and transfer your stuff to there and then copy it to the new imac. or you could even use the old imac as a network storage area.

Yes just put it back in the old Mac could put it back in the old Mac. I was looking at your Macs specs in Mactracker. Only USB 1.1, I now understand about the time to fill your ipod.

Hey thanks for the advice. I might link up both macs with a USB cable and let it slowly transfer over the data.

And yeah USB 1.1 is so outdated these days haha!.

A faster way, I think, would be with a Ethernet cable, no?

Good call, ethernet would definitely be the easiest way to go. He would have to manually reinstall all his apps and other settings tho. I guess you have to do that with an external drive also.
