Power Mac - G4 400mhz upgrade to 733mhz

I have one quick question that I cannot find an answer to (via searchign here and Google).

dametalmilitia is selling a G4 733mhz PPC chip.. I ahve a G4 400mhz as in my sig.. Simple, can I put the 733 into mine? By comparing pics of the 2, they look kind of similar regarding mounting holes, but as far as functionality goes, will it work? I don't want to buy it off him only to not have it work. THanks!

As long as the card is compatible with your model, and you have the latest firmware update for the machine, it should work fine.

If you have a Yikes G4, I doubt that the 733MHz DA G4 chip will work. I think the Yikes G4 uses an entirely different interface...

If you have a Sawtooth G4, it would be a long shot but I've never heard of anyone trying it.

It's not a Yikes!... It's a 400mhz AGP Sawtooth.

If you have a Sawtooth, then I'm not sure what would happen. My inclination is that it probably wouldn't boot, but I don't know that it's ever been tried before. I do know that the 733MHz G4 DA chip should physically fit into the socket on your 400MHz G4 Sawtooth. You will also want to use the heatsink from the 733MHz G4 DA since it makes a bit more heat than the 400MHz G4.
