I have a G5: Recently it has been freezing on software quite a bit and has been making noises from inside. A noise like a fast ticking clock. Has anyone come across this and should I be worried?

Here's my noise:

iMac G5 20" does a chirping noise

Does your noise sound like the same?

It's a bomb!

Just kidding.

How old is the box? if it's not extremely new (year+ usually) the freeze up *may* be hard drive related. You can figure that out with a disk scanning program, monitoring where the freeze ups occur (randomly ? at the same instance?) and various other observations.

The sound too, could be most likely:

vid card fan, CPU fan, power supply fan (or the internals of a power supply), hard drive, media drive (CDrom, floppy etc) there isn't a ton of "sound" generating parts in a computer.

I'm at work so if I remember to hear the sound when I get home, I may be able to give you a less generic resolution.

Listening to the clip:

Fan.
Get into the inside and maybe get a Ozone blower, spray the fan with it (safely) and it may take out the debree portion.

nothing else would make that constant of a sound
