Run boot camp and get an external hard drive. This way you can use Windows to download your torrents and store them on an external drive. Your OS X partition will be fairly secure this way.

Edit: Oops, this only applies to an Intel iMac. Please disregard One option is to get an external Firewire hard drive, clone your main drive onto that, and use it for downloading; then reboot back onto your main drive and pull the files from the external drive. A bit of a stretch though...

Probably the most nonsensical "solution" I've seen in a while. He's got a G5, not an Intel machine, and OS X isn't nearly as susceptible to viruses and spyware as Windows.

Spyware/Adware really doesn't affect a Mac due to the fact that almost all spyware runs on the .exe app format, which OS X doesn't understand. .img (which OS X uses) and .exe are like comparing an apple to an orange- it just doesn't work.

the back of our computer looks better than the front of theirs

it is true that there are no viruses for os x, but some virus protection is smart in case any are ever released, which I do not see happening since a virus would need your permission to install. you should also use AV software if you are networked with windows boxes or share files with windows. to the poster saying to install windows on an external hd using boot camp, don't do it.
