You will need to supply far far much more information than that.

Your Mac for example, its specification, the version of Mac OS X you are trying to install, how far installation gets before a kernel panic etc...

At the moment you're asking me to find a very specific fish and a very big ocean :flower:

Ok don't worry, no need to apologise—I know what it's like, something doesn't work and you type hurredly hoping for a quick solution.

Firstly; are you booting with the install DVD with 'C' held down on the keyboard?

Secondly, have you tried resetting the defaults in open firmware?

What happens if you boot with Command + S held down on startup?

Has it ever worked properly?

And finally, have you checked the RAM is seated properly?

Hopefully should give you plenty to check! :flower:

im not sure about resetting defaults in open firmware but i have tryed somethig along those lines..(the thing where the startup chimes 3 times?)
i just started up with the comm+s held down, and it went to root just fine....(turned my mac into a haidryer though
i checked the ram as well cos i had some dodgey ram in there before...but its only got the apple shipped ram in there now...
(i wish they would knock ddr2 on the head!)*sigh*
anyway, ive discovered a small button located near my ram chips...is this like a bios clear or something??
cheers again vicky

That is the PMU (Power Management Unit)—press it once and once only, this resets everything; try it and see what happens.

Also try removing some of the Apple shipped RAM if you have more than 2 memory modules in place; if you only have 2 memory DIMMs then they need to remain as the G5 needs them in pairs. You may find its fine with some of the memory removed indicating a bad memory module.

Ok... so it went to root fine— do the Command + S thing on startup again and run:

fsck -fy <ENTER>

this is file system check and it runs through the HD and fixes if it can any probs.

Finally you should have the Apple Hardware test (AHT) on one of the Restore DVDs. The instructions how to run it are printed on the disc, try running that through.

Isn't it on the first restore DVD, it is for my PowerBook G4? it says pop it in the CD tray and then hold down Option to boot the AHT.

all the service disks for these machines remain lost so im running with just one osx disk, i will ask around for a copy of the aht and see if that shows up anything and get back...
