Turn on , apple logo with spinning wheel comes on , then goes black with only cursor working

First, welcome to our forums.

You didn't give us much info to help us help you. Tell us which Mac you have (year and model) and what version of OS X you're running.

The symptom you described can be attributed to many things going wrong. Provide us with the info above and we'll go from there.
