has anyone tried various versions of os x for the older imacs (colourfull all in one box) its a 333 mhz i think, 256 ram.

I heard that the latest 10.4 is the fastest os x for older machines. is this correct?

Also, is it possible to overclock a dual 1.8?

cheers.

I was running Panther - 10.3.9 - on my 333. I never tried Tiger because it is not supported on machines without firewire and because it uses more memory. Tiger also caused some problems with classic apps that worked perfectly under Panther. If you want to try Tiger you can use XPostFacto to install it however you'll want to max out the RAM to 512mb.

My buddy has a G3 266mhz with 160mb ram, and it runs Tiger fine, until you start multi-tasking. If you have Safari and Adium/MSN/Whatever chat app, as the only open things, I think you should be fine. If not, use 10.2.8 Jaguar. I liked that version a lot.

Jaguar is the last usable OS you ought to use. Panther is pretty much the quintessential OS for older macs though.
