i would like to connect my imac so that it will like an external hardrive for my macbook (and use my macbook as ext harddrive for my imac. is there a program to do this or a special cable.

Firewire cable is the best option. Failing that network sharing via a router.

Without any information regarding which iMac you have and which MacBook you have, it's difficult to suggest a method. Just a guess here... but you may be able to use Firewire Target Disk mode. Take a look at his Apple KB article: LINK
