I have AirPort Time Capsule and I use Time Machine to backup my iMac. I have an extra WD external hard drive that I would like to backup my iMac as an extra backup in case my Time capsule dies. I would probably do this extra backup twice a year. How can I perform this extra backup without messing with my AirPort Time Capsule and Time Machine.
QUOTE Thanks

Hook up your external, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Disk Utility and then use cloning software such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Either are bootable from the external drive if the internal fails.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
