I have a 2012 Mac mini if I get the 2010 outer case and optical drive can i install it on my 2012 model Mac mini ?

Mac Specs: iMac i5 2.7GHz, 16GB memory, OS 10.10.1

Why get the 2010 outer case? Just buy a new external optical drive and choose USB or FW connection.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Probably not since the logic board and component layout is different. Harry gave you the best advice.
