Migration assistant

I just inherited a newer iMac and used Migration assistant to transfer my older iMac to the new. I have had a myriad of problems, some of which I solved and others which I will address as I go along.

My major issue (question) now is the Mac operating system. My old iMac was at OS 10.6.8 and the one I inherited was at 10.5.8. After using migration assistant the newer iMac is still at 10.5.8. My question - shouldn't the 10.6.8 have been transferred to the newer machine?

Suggestions will be appreciated

No, Migration Assistsent transfers applications prefs and data, it does not backup or transfer the core operating system

Many of your problems may be due to moving from a newer to an older OS

That is very bad news. To make a short story long my older iMac hard drive failed recently and was replaced at the Apple store. They reinstalled OS10.5 but some time later it mysteriously jumped to 10.6.8. I don't suppose there is any way to move 10.6.8 to the newer machine (I do not have the CDs)

It think it does explain some of my problems though - iTunes won't open because it was based on a v10.7 which requires OS 10.6.

Thanx

The easiest and least expensive will be to call Apple and order Snow Leopard. It's not for sell in the stores. They are still selling it cheaper than you can get the retail set used or 3rd party.

I see a download for 10.6 at this web site. Can this possibly be legitimate?

No it is not legit. Apple are the only sellers of their software and not by download either for Snow Leopard. bobtomay staff member gave you the good oil.

They are definitely not legal copies. They have paid zero money to the developers of any of that software.

You will notice this line in their FAQ section:

3. Can I still get updates from the manufacturer's websites?

Yes you can. Our software is full and legal to upgrade unless it is mentioned in the instructions, which come with the software. You can also ask our Support team about exceptions.
e.g. After you give us your money and download the product, we'll tell you whether you can call the developer for support. I can tell you now, you can't - because it's not a legal copy.

What they're doing is no different than your next door neighbor buying one copy, copying it to his computer and then re-selling it without permission.

Call Apple (1-800-MY-APPLE), they are still selling Snow Leopard for either $20 or $30 - have heard both prices.

edit: I also removed the link.

Thank you for the advice bobtomay. You have saved my butt. I did call the Apple number and purchased 10.608 for only $19.99. The disc will arrive in 5days

Thanx again

No problem. At Apple's prices for their OS, hardly makes it worthwhile to spend the time trying to save a few.

Nice to confirm they're still honoring that $20 price also.
