Ok to upgrade to a 2gb and 1 gb ram or should it be 2gb x 2 even though the mac can only utilise 3gb?

Though conventional wisdom has always been to use matched pair for ideal performance, if the system can only use up to 3GB of memory, then one 2GB and one 1GB memory sticks should be fine I think..
