I am the proud owner of a vintage(support status) Imac 17" Horizon
it has a speedy 1.25 ghz powerPC 7455 v3.3
an 80 gig hd(new, Blank)
a 4x tray loading super dvd
and is a excellent door stop

I have tried to load my retail osx v10.2 to no avail
all I get is a flashing icon of a folder with a ?
having read several forum posts about what to do to fix it
alas no will work for me.
there is no previous OS on it as I added the hd my self
and it came with no hd.
The cd drive works as I tried it out on my widows machine.
Any help would be appreciated.

You need to boot the machine with your 10.2 disk and format the hard drive. (Make sure you use the "Apple Partition Map" for the partition scheme.) Then, you can load the operating system and proceed with loading apps.

Have you tried booting with the C key held down? Does it make the Apple Start Up sound/chime? If so, when you hear that hold C down and keep it down. Report back.

You say the 10.2 CD is a Retail?

Try holding down Option right after the startup sound. Keep it down and see if a boot menu comes up. Could be a defective Optical drive.

That model Mac originally came with 10.2.7. (if I read MacTracker correctly)
The retail 10.2 CD doesn't have the required driver(s) for the motherboard.

10.3, 10.4, 10.5 should work.

Interesting possibility but usually here when I put in an OSX CD/DVD that is too old it will say that this version will not work with the hardware and not get the no sign apple.

Next suggestion is you have a failed optical drive on your hands. Slot loaders do have a high failure rate. try blowing out with canned compressed air for starters.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
