I have a 2006 20" imac that is totally dead. It was working fine and now it isn't.
I'm a mac novice but well experienced fixing laptops / pcs

I've taken the front off and removed the screen, i wanted to test for power but I'm a little confused with what to test, it looks to have a main power board and an inverter for the screen. the main cable is somewhere under the motherboard.

what would you be testing/replacing first?

regards James

Sounds like power supply. Some iMacs of that vintage did suffer from this.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Don't know which specific model you have, but have you looked at ifixit?

Installing iMac Intel 20" EMC 2105 and 2118 Power Supply - iFixit

http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/iM..._2105_and_2118

ifixit lists what I believe may be your part in stock for $139.95

I've always wanted to be smart, handsome and modest. But, I guess I'll have to be satisfied with two out of three . . .
