I do a lot of HD video editing on my Macbook Pro

2.8 Core 2 Duo
8 gb ram
Lion
FCP

It bogs down a lot when editing long videos. I'm considering getting an iMac with the 2.5 I5 and 16 gb of ram. Do you think I would notice a huge improvement or am I kidding myself? Thanks!

Without knowing which precise model of MBP you have, I've had to take a stab and picked the only 2.8GHz C2D I could find. Anyways, if this is the model you have, here's the Geek Bench score for when your model was standard.



Here's the Geek Bench score for the 2.5 21.5" iMac.



As you can see, standard, the iMac is twice as "fast" - with 16gb of RAM it would be even better. I have no experience using FCP, so can't tell you if you'd notice a difference or not, but based on the those figures, I would hazard a guess at "Yes, you would".

Dude this is some incredible info for me. I really appreciate it. Obviously it will make some definite improvement to move to the iMac.

One bit of advice, don't buy ram from Apple. It's very overpriced, you'd save a lot just by getting the standard amount, and upgrading it yourself later with ram from a place like Other World Computing.
