I know I can upgrade the processor:
Quad Core 2.4ghz Mac Pro

Will the board support a 3.3ghz 6 core if they are the same socket?

This is what I am looking at changing up to:
INTEL XEON 6 CORE PROCESSOR W3680 3.33GHZ 12MB L3 CACHE 130W
QUOTE Thanks

My first thoughts are:

- some quad-core Mac Pro's can be upgraded to a faster quad-core
- some quad-core Mac Pros can be upgrade to 8-core (2 quad-cores) provided they have the mounting surfaces for 2x quad-cores

...this assumes the same type cpu socket.

But upgrading to a 6-core from a quad-core...I'm not 100% sure about.

You see there are no "official" Mac Pro processors upgrades that I know of...except this program offered by OWC (which only seems to cover 2010 Mac Pro's):

Turnkey Program for Apple Mac Pro 2010 - Intel Xeon Processor Upgrades for up to 12-Core 3.33GHz

Almost all Mac Pro cpu upgrades you read about on the internet are "DIY" projects...and thus...if you mess something up...you could have one VERY expensive doorstop. So the advice is...do LOTS & LOTS of homework before you proceed!

Upgrade base dual 2.4GHz quad core to dual 2.93GHz hex core - MacRumors Forums

As Nick advises it is a user beware. If you have Applecare on the Mac Pro this voids the warranty.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
