Im looking for a bit of advise
I have a mid 2010 27" iMac i5 and the hdd has failed 2 months out of warranty the hard drive i have is a WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0 1TB but i can't find a exact replacement anywhere I've been looking around and i know you can fit almost any Hdd but you have to tape a thermal sensor onto the drive or install a program to prevent the fans from running at full power I'm not too keen on doing this. so does anybody have any idea if this HDD will have the correct pin configuration so the thermal sensor will just plug in? and will it run ok in my iMac? WDC WD1502FAEX 1.5TB |

I'm certainly not expert on this, but to my knowledge the hard drives used by Apple in the mid 2010 and mid 2011 iMacs are proprietary with regard to the heat sensor and connector. The 500 GB drives are by Seagate, the larger ones by WD, but both have the special heat sensor and connector. Without the proper heat sensor and connector, the hard drive fan will spin up to full RPM.
Other World Computing has written up a work around for using other than the original Apple proprietary drives. See if you can Google up what they've come up with. As far as swapping out the drive, ifixit has instructions. |
