I'm new to Macs, Iv just bought a Mac Mini, I really like it. I also have a PC laptop.
I want to use the mac a bit like a server in that I want to share the hard drive on it and the Iomega external hard drive. I have successfully networked them together but I only seem to be able to share certain folders on the mac and not the HD, even though I can access the HD on the PC with no probs. The second prob I have is that I have a Ethernet router, which must be working as I can access the internet through it with the PC and cable modem plugged in it. But when I put the mac Ethernet cable in it with the other two devices plugged in the router nether PC or Mac can see each other, when I plug them in directly they do I came across something called iDisc but it looks like I have to subscribe or something. I'm a bit lost here. Can anyone help. Much appreciated. |

1) you need to turn on windows sharing in the system prefs
2) you must have a cross over cable rather than a patch cable so go get a new one and problem solved 3)iDisk is part of the .Mac subscription service and yea you have to pay for it and its $99/£69 a year but well worth it IMO ![]() Apple, think different |

I have turned on Windows sharing What is the dif between an standard network cable and a cross over cable, and will this work through a router. And to enable all of this do I need to sign up to iDisc, if so, do I need to be connected to the internet all of the time for this to work, my PC is the primary internet user Cheers |

this tutorial might help you
http://www.chouk.co.uk/macsharing/ But you can skip some of the steps since you have already connected both mac and pc on your router. btw, you don't need iDisc.
