Hey guys,
I have a small issue with my DVD drive that I can not understand. First off the drive appears to work correctly, I recently added two music CD's to iTunes without incident. The problems arise however the moment I put in a movie DVD, basically the machine takes a few go's at looking at them then spits them out again as if unable to read them. This happens with every single DVD I own....it is certainly not the DVDs. Once I have put in a DVD and my machine has spat it out again however, I can no longer load up the applications DVD & CD (from Settings) or the Disk Utility, both produce the rainbow wheel and just sit there forever. To me this is very similar to when I used to run VMFusion and sometimes the Windows partition would grab hold of the drive and not allow OSX to access it. Does anybody have any ideas as to why this would be happening? Why I can happily run music CD's but not DVDs? Thanks, Andrew |

Yes. DVD and CD's use a different sized "groove" for want of a better word. Basically the spacing for the data are different, so when a drive is either dirty or on it's way out, you will quite often see this.
I would suggest giving the drive a clean first, but I suspect that it may be due to be replaced sadly. Try my custom Mac Forums Search Engine: Mac Forums Google Search Please use the reputation system if you consider any help given useful (it's the little ✓/✘ on the left <---) ![]() |
