I've been looking around the iTunes store and it seems there are only apps for the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Is this true and if so why are there no apps for iMac?

You're looking for the Mac App Store which is separate. If you're using Snow Leopard, you can download it (if you aren't using 10.6.8) and if you're using Lion, it's already included in your Applications directory.
