New iMac Hard Drive

i have a 2.0 ghz imac g5 17". the rest of the specs are under my name. i want to put in a bigger hard drive. a few questions. 1. is this one of the diy parts according to apple? 2. what hard rives wll work in my imac g5. 3. am i coorect that i can use carbon copy cloner to copy everything to the new hard rive?

1. Yes, the HD is one of the CIPs (customer installable parts) according to this:

2. Any 3.5" SATA hardrive will work. An IDE (or PATA) HD will not work.

3. Yes, you can use Carbon copy cloner to move everything from one HD on the other, the latest version is OS X 10.4.2-compatible. Another possibility would be to boot from an external firewire HD (if you have one) and use Disk Utility's restore function. I don't know how fast Carbon copy cloner is, but with Disk utility I recently cloned a 3/4 full 160GB HD in about 30min. But you need to boot from a disk that is not the one you want to copy.

ok thatnks. but is there a limit on the size of the hard drive. i know apple only will put in up to a 400gb. could i put in a 500gb??

I think you can. Apple specified 400GB because that was the biggest available when that iMac was introduced. technically, I don't really see why you couldn't put a 500GB drive in it.
I'm not 100% sure though...

You can get the new iMac with 500gb drives. So like Avalon suggested it should not be a problem.
