Hey everyone,

So I recently bought a Mac Pro and I'm looking to upgrade the graphics card on it. Currently, my unit has a NVidia GeForce 8800 GT - 512 mb. I'm looking at some of the newer Radeons to replace it.

First off, any suggestions for a solid graphics card? I'm not really a gamer, but I do a lot of video editing, graphic design and HD video streaming. Also, since I'll be buying another card, is there any benefit/is it possible to keep my old graphics card in place as well? I don't run that many monitors so I wouldn't need the monitor hookups on both, but would their speed work together?

Thanks!
Mike

"First off"...we need to know exactly which Mac Pro model you have. There have been approx. 4-5 different Mac Pro models since 2006...and not all available Macintosh video cards are compatible with all Mac Pro models.

But regardless of Mac Pro model...you can install up to 4 video cards...and run up to 8 monitors.

Seeing it is a 8800, move it to slot 4, and look at an ATI Radeon HD4870/5870. The problem you may run into is the cards mentioned have two power leads and use both logic board connections.

From memory, think the 8800GT uses one power lead. Have seen recommendations for and strongly against split cables.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
