Which MacPro?

Hi,

I own a G4 400@1.5Ghz with 1.5Ghz of Ram running 10.4.11

It's going too slow to me and I'd like to change for a MacPro.

I'l looking for a MacPro for Destop Publishing and Image Editing, that I can upgrade myself with non-expensive processor easilly available in stores around me.

Is this one worth it : Mac Pro Xeon 5400 2x4 Core 2,8Ghz/2/500

Thanks for your help, greatly appreciated.

Yes that one is worth. Mac Pro is a great Future proof machine

But I think upgrading Mac Pro's processor by yourself might void the warranty.

Unless you have better stores there in France than we do here in the U.S., doubt you're going to walk into one and walk out with an inexpensive server grade LGA 771 processor to upgrade that Mac Pro.

The warranty is not an issue.
I remember one of the old Mac Pro (2009?) has old procs that are easilly removable.
I've done thinkgs like that with my PCs and even my PM9600 and G4. I'm not afraid of such "work".

@ bobtomay -> That means the MP I've shown is too recent. It was sold 1900 € in a used computer store in Paris.

There is no such thing as cheap processors. For example Intel Xeon Quad Core X5365 which will upgrade a Mac Pro 1.1 still sell new for some $700 each, and used on eBay etc about $350.00 each.

Rather than the 2.8GHz look for a 3.2Ghz model and hard to say without an actual price or is that what the '500' refers to?

Well without the price very hard to say. It would be a steal at $1,200 but way overpriced at $2,400.

You'll want to bump the RAM to at least 8GB and if you're working with huge files, you'll probably want a larger hard drive or two (2TB drives are pretty cheap these days but you'll need to ensure that you have the proper drive carriers to support additional drives - OWC makes some nice ones).

Other than that an 8 CORE Mac Pro is a fantastic machine. I have one of the first ones Apple made and it works amazingly well for me every single day.

I've finally found an early 20008 MP with 8Gb RAM i'll upgrade up to 32, and i'll ad a SSD disk fir the system and programs.
