Got the last of the non-glass-screen iMacs, white plastic 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

It is running Snow Leopard. What would advantages/disadvantages be to moving it up to Lion?

If you happen to have purchase software apps or hardware that requires Lion (probably not much of that around yet).

As far as advantages/disadvantages...have you read any of the "bazillion" internet based reviews of Lion!

One BIG disadvantage of upgrading to Lion would be having important applications that aren't Lion compatible or Lion compatible yet.

I stopped that after a bit as too time-consuming. Because, I'm not really interested in the GUI aspects of the OS. I don't buy Macs because I like the operating system; I buy them because they don't need as much fiddling as Windows machines.

So I'm interested not in "is Lion great" as a general theme.

I'm interested in will Lion be:
- Faster/slower
- Use less/more memory
- Take up less/more hard drive space (since I plan to change to SSD)
compared to Snow Leopard...
...and in particular on this older Core 2 Duo machine.

Your comment about applications is a good one! I'll have to check if some things like XLD etc support that yet.

Based solely on what you've said above, I'd stick with Snow Leopard. It's incredibly stable, almost everything works with it, bugs have been sorted, it runs plenty fast (particularly if you're getting a SSD - which I have) and it probably "bonds" better with your processor. Only my opinion.

Thanks for the update...although it has been 11 months since your last post!

Since then...OS 10.8 Mountain Lion has been released (not sure if your computer meets the system requirements for 10.8). A lot can happen in 11 months!

A very ironic statement since its the OS, that you care least about, that makes a Mac behave as well as it does..
