Officially Apple says the max ram for this iMac is 4gb. Has anyone put in more? What would happen if I upgraded to 8gb?

Thanks,
Eric

According to Mactracker, your machine is an early 2008 24" iMac. Since there is only one set of memory banks, that means two modules. You can unofficially put in 6 GB and it should recognize and use it. The key word here is "should". Apple says the machine can only use 4 GB maximum.

I'm not sure what would happen if you used two 4 GB modules for a total of 8 GB but suspect that it either would not boot or it may just ignore the second module. Even putting in one 4 GB and one 2 GB module for a total of 6 GB may also give the same result.

Buy the memory from somewhere that you can return it for a refund if things don't work out.

No problems at all - 2GB + 4GB - in my iMac 24" 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo (iMac 8,1). I was tempted to try 8GB, but 6 is working pretty darn well. I run both Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and Lion 10.7. Good speed, lots of apps running, over 50 browser tabs/windows in Safari open. I did upgrade to a fast internal 1.5TB drive (with about 1TB free at the moment), which definitely helped.
