Hi All

New to the forums. My first post. So sorry if this is not the best place to start this thread.
I,m looking to get a mac to match my pc for photoshop, music, maybe gaming nothing to extreme. My PC system is a

intel core 2 quad cpu processor 2.4ghz
2 gb of ram
nvidia GT6800gt graphics card and 500gb hard drive
19 inch tft

Been looking at the all in one g5,s on ebay. Only thinking of spending around £400 tops. So nothing to new. Would just like to swap it all into one package and switch to mac.

Any thoughts please. On what the best system either g5,powermac or mini to buy.

Thank you in advance

Andy

You will not be happy with a G5/PowerPC computer. Apple is close to dropping all support (software updates/security etc) for those. On your budget, an Intel Mac mini would be better. Even a used one - just be sure to get a Core 2 Duo or better processor, Not Core Duo (which is limited to 32 bit).

I'm not 100% sure what your goal is? When you say "Looking to get a Mac to match my PC"...do you mean from a specification & performance standpoint?

This is really not a good way to go about shopping for a Mac...since having exactly the same processing power/same specifications do not guarantee any sort of equivalent performance.

As already mentioned...a Powermac G5 would not be satisfactory.

Hi
Sorry guess its not made much sense from my part. I really want an all in one that i can use for general use.But my main aim is photoshop of which i use cs3. Gonna keep this downstairs on the dining table hence the small form factor. But wanted a 20" screen. If i want fast gaming i will go use the pc upstairs.
So just wanted something good for photography, design fo my website etc. That would not slow down as it builds up like my pc. Always loved the look of macs and the software. Just never had the chance to try

Thank you

So as I read things...it sounds like you're looking for an "All-In-One" Mac that will run CS3 ok. If this is the case then a "G5" based computer would be ok.

But...you mentioned in post #1...a Powermac and a Mac-Mini. There are no "All-In-One" Powermac's or Mac-mini's. The only desktop "All-In-One" Macintosh computer's are the iMac line of computers. Of course technically...laptops could also be considered an "All-In-One" computer.

Since you mentioned that your budget is £400 tops...sounds like you may be located in the UK. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with what you can get for £400 (or less) in the UK for a used Mac computer. You could check:

Mac2Sell

...for used mac values.

Like I mentioned...an All-In-One iMac G5 would be able to run CS3 just fine (you would have to purchase CS3 version for the Mac)...but if your budget allows...a core 2 duo based Intel iMac would be much better.

HTH,

Hi Nick
Thankyou for replying, yeah i am in the UK, have found some good sources of 2nd user macs. Thats basicly what its for and they are quite cheaper to buy now here if its a few years old (white plastic version) around 1.8ghz 2 core duo or 3ghz single. But if it had meant getting a powermac tower or a smaller mac mini To get the benefit of using a mac for what i wanted, then i would have switched.

Thank you again
