Ok, maybe this is the wrong forum. Shoot me.
I finally got around to breaking down and removing the CPU unit from my old Quad G5 PPC Mac. No signs of coolant leakage and there seems to have been a fair amount of grease on the heat sync so I doubt it was that. I'm now thinking perhaps the pump for CPU a stopped working and that's what caused the over heating issue. If not that than something with the MB went south. I'll pull that out next and take a peek. Here's some pics: First pic is the PPC 750 (Dual Core G5 CPU) top. Second pic is the bottom, note the heat sync and how the CPU is integrated into the board. Thirds is the CPU board and it's associated radiator. Fourth is the radiator itself, each CPU board has one. Fifth is the liquid cooling pumps on the top of the CPU assembly (NOTE the assembly is missing the CPU board pictured here). ![]() Last edited by baggss; 07-18-2011 at 10:40 PM. |

Last Pic. The shows the bottom of the CPU assembly that butted up against the MB. There was a large piece of rubbery plastic between the MB and this side to keep the two from meeting. Note the liquid cooling tube that runs to the bottom of this assembly where the CPU board attaches to the CPU assembly. Pretty impressive piping.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer! |

I don't really have any intention of trying to get the machine running again. I really just wanted to see if there was any evidence of the CPU coolant leakage that caused the heat issues with CPU 1. I'll take the rest of the box apart and see what I see but that machine is done for.
