Our shop is finally making the switch fom avid to FCP. My question, is it worth it to spend the extra money on the 12 core? Will FCP address all 12? Is there that much difference in performance between the 8 and 12 core? Finally, do you think there will be updated Mac pros within the next month or so? Forgive all my questions, I'm new to the Mac world. thanks.

Final Cut Pro will work fine with the 8 core machine and plenty of memory. As for when an update to the Mac Pro line is announced by Apple, no one knows. However, the MP is top of the line in the Apple family and does not get updated as often as the MacBook Pro or iMac.

Great. Thanks for the response. One more question, can you mix ram capacities? It comes with 6 1gb sticks, can I add 2 additional 8gb sticks with no problems or should they all be the same? On our hp workstations, they recommend that all ram slots should have the same amount of ram. Thanks again for the info.

Its recommended that you have matching RAM, but its not required.
