Is it just me or does it seem like the disc drive in the iMac is cheap? It's loud and has a hard time reading discs, particularly if its warmed up from reading a disc already. What gives?

See many posts about failed optical drives in iMacs and MacBooks. Personally think it is a failure with the minaturization in the drives. Desktops seem to have much fewer optical drive problems.

Do a search.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
