Does the iMac 27" have the same display as the Cinema 27" if you buy it separately for $999? Or is it a gimped version of the display?

I don't know for a fact...but I would think that the Apple 27" display & the 27" iMac display are the same (just from an economies of scale, manufacturing inventory, etc. perspectives)...with no limitations.

Thus the very reason why this refurbished 27" 3.06ghz Core 2 Duo for $1269:

Refurbished iMac 27-inch 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - Apple Store (U.S.)

...is such a great deal vs. the $999 27" Apple display. For just $270 more...you get a full fledged computer, wireless keyboard, and wireless mouse!!!

- Nick

p.s. The 27" iMacs also have a "video-in" port...which is something previous iMacs did not have.
