I have just purchased an iMac, its a base model 21.5" with 4gb ram, 1tb hard disk etc.
I want to increase the ram to 8gb so my question is.
Can I use the ram i took from my 2011 mbp which is 2x2gb

    cheers in advance.

I think you can yes as they are (as memory serves so don't quote me on this) both 204 pin DDR3 PC3.
I'm no expert though so anyone else with some input?

For any questions like this you can head to

There you'll be able to find all the specs for your Macs, including verifying number RAM of slots, the type of RAM used and maximum amount of RAM you can use in each machine.

One little key there - head down to USB Ports section and click the link to Complete Ports and it'll show you all the ports on your machine.

you should be able to swap the RAM out, i did that with my two macs. however my imac is late 2009, but they should be the same, they only really upgraded the processors last year.
