Yes Mike it is possible to install OS X on a G3 400Mhz iMac indeed.

First though you need to do a couple of things to ensure a smooth transition to OS X.

Make sure that the Firmware is updated on the iMac,look on the Apple website for the free download to update it (This is very IMPORTANT don't try to go to OS X without doing this or your iMac will fry!!!!)

Make sure you have a least 256MB of RAM (ideal would be 512MB RAM).
Then the best way is to upgrade from OS 8.6 in steps through to OS 9.2.2 then go to OS X.

I think it may be possible to go straight to OS X from OS 8.6 but I am not certain. (I think Badger will know).

Hope this helps
Paul

Paul said it. The only thing I would add is that the firmware update should be done from 9.1 or higher. Since later versions of X require 9.2 you may wish to upgrade to that level and then do OS X. You can install/run X without a version of 9 but you must use 9 for the firmware update and then delete it when you install X. Here's a link for the firmware updater and info: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.h...=75130#English. A good source for info on these models is www.lowendmac.com.
