restart unsuccessful after safe boot

iMac 10.4.11.0 Started freezing up, spinning beachball. Will safe boot but then after restart freezes again as soon as I touch anything with the mouse cursor. The Missing Manual mentions kernel extensions, fonts etc. So far I have set no programs to open at start up, but I am stymied as to what to do. Thanks.

G'day and welcome to th forums.
You do have your Tiger install disc? Pop it in and reboot holding down 'C' and after selecting language go to Utilities > Disk Utility and run Repair Disk and see what is reported for starters. Keep us posted?Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!
