Since she hasn't decided to share with me how she did it, I need help! I came home and found the screen display showing white text and black background, color images in negative, etc., and I have not found a "preference" or setting I can alter to change it back to normal.
Anyone?

I guess she found the mouse too big of a temptation.

Sorry for the bad joke and hope you get a quick fix to your problem.

And you're not the first who's cat has figured out how to do that. It's a conspiracy.

I followed the link posted. interesting . . . especially the keyboard shortcut. I'm assuming from that, that your problem resulted from your cat walking on the keyboard.
It is extremely unlikely she will manage to duplicate that exact sequence again, but there are probably some less happy outcomes possible if she continues to stroll on your keyboard.
You may want to consider logging out when you leave your Mac for any extended period of time. Just don't share your password with your cat!

System Preferences, Universal Access. Look under Display. Your cat hit the hot keys and turned that feature for people with visual disabilities! Seen it happen many times.

A novice to MACs in general, I prowled through the "preferences" menus and finally in the "keyboard and mouse" section found, under shortcuts, "reverse black and white". Still puzzled at how Kiki figured this one out, I then had to find a way to look up which keys were represented by the keyboard shortcut symbols....ah. finally. Back to normal.
Thanks for your comments!
I will turn off the computer when I leave next time! turning off the monitor is obviously not enough! She's watching me type now, and is probably memorizing.....

Glad everything has turned out well. You don't have to turn off your Mac, just log out . . . assuming you have a user accounts set up (always a good idea, especially since it allows you to set up guest log ins if you have a visitor who wants to use your Mac to check eMail--no worrys then about them inadvertently changing your settings).
