I've seen Bluetooth cards supposedly compatible with eMacs for sale online but does anyone here know where/how to install them on said machine?

I think your best bet would be to go down the bluetooth dongle road. This adapter: D-Link Wireless Bluetooth 2.0 USB Adapter according to a mac-rumours thread is compatible with emac machines.
    Hope this helps

Shame you are not Down Under. Selling a D Link DBT-120 USB 2 bluetooth dongle for ten bucks and cannot raise a bid. Cost $64 two years ago alas! Have used it with MDD so should work on an eMac.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

So is installing an actual internal card/chip not recommended, or what? Does it involve a soldering iron?

The eMac 1.42 does support Bluetooth 1.1. Cards are available on eBay and such but they are a lottery as 1.1 is getting quite old. This is the card:-

Be aware they are the very devil to fit and firstly make sure the antenna wires are in your machine by cracking it open.
