Suddenly the icon for my external hard drive has disappeared. I cannot remember how to reinstate it. The drive's power light is on, and when the iMac boots up the drives light flickers as if it's working. Or, has the drive died?
I should be most grateful for any advice. Thanks

Bring up your Finder Preferences and make sure External Disks is checked under Show on Desktop.

Open Disk Utility from Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.app. Are you able to see the hard drive? If you can see it, highlight it on the left side (top entry), select the First Aid tab on the right side, and run a Verify and Repair. Let us know the results. (That will test the external hard drive for errors.)

Hi chscag, thanks for your advice, I've done a 'repair' and it says "the volume could not be repaired because of an error". Ok, so down to the computer shop and buy another before there's a total disaster!
