Lifetime of an iMac vs Display

English isn't my first language so please be gentle ;p I'm currently debating whether I will buy an iMac or a 27"Apple display with a macbook pro. I have a couple of questions: 1. What is the estimated lifetime of (just) a display or monitor? Is it longer than the iMacs? 2. If computerhardware breaks in the iMac, could the iMac still serve as a display for my macbook pro?
