G'day and welcome to the forums.

Not all the same but similar for sure. And alas the iMac uses a laptop sized optical drive and they seem to have a much, much higher failure rate than desktop models. Just go through the threads dealing with failed iMac and MacBook/Pro superdrive problems.

All that miniturisation is not a good thing. You may be better off looking for an external drive, however having a PPC Mac, it will need to be Firewire to be bootable.
