Hello everyone,
I plan to max out ram on my Powermac G4 Sawtooth 500Mhz AGP graphics. Do I need to purchase low density ram or is high density suitable. Also is this ram on eBay going to work on my mac?
1GB (2x512MB) SD RAM PC133 168pin 512MB MEMORY 512MB - eBay SDRAM, Memory, RAM, Components, Computers. (end time 30-Sep-10 21:45:51 AEST)
Thanks, Robert

Buying ram on e-Bay for an older Mac computer like a G4 Sawtooth is really a risky pursuit. The chances that it won't work are pretty high. Then you either wasted your money buying it...or have a hassle trying to get a refund from the seller.

Just buy your ram from someone like:

OWC

...and you'll be in great shape. FYI...other folks in Australia order from them as well!

Do not buy the memory shown in the post.

It is high density and your Mac, which is a Sawtooth as you describe, will only boot from low density memory. Do as Nick suggests and go to the OWC link and there you will see the specs required.

Ok, thanks for quick reply guys. The RAM on OWC website looks good but is a little bit expensive. You said that low density is compatable so will this work:
512MB PC133 DIMM 168PIN SDRAM LOW DENSITY CL3 MEMORY - eBay SDRAM, Memory, RAM, Components, Computers. (end time 10-Oct-10 03:12:00 AEDST)
I know you said its risky buying from eBay but at the moment cant afford from OWC.
Thanks

Just ask the seller if they will take it back if it does not work in your Sawtooth is the simplest way. If they will not, avoid it.

Can you afford to buy the wrong ram...and then not be able to return it? I'm not saying that you can't find the correct ram for your Mac on e-Bay...there's just no guarantees. Mac's sometimes are picky about the ram that's used in them.

Usually when the price is too good to be true...it probably is. We get a lot of folks posting here with ram problems...just don't want you to be another one!

Just another thing about the sawtooth. Seeing that it has PCI slots aswell as AGP can it also take PCI graphics card, also what is the fastest graphics card which will go into a sawtooth.

Hopefully you will get an honest answer...and not just the answer the seller thinks you want to hear! 9 times out of 10...e-Bay sellers of ram know nothing about Macintosh computers...so be careful with the answers you get.

Good luck,

Great suggestion "Mac SK"! An e-Bay seller that specializes in Macintosh equipment is bound to be more knowledgeable about whether the ram they sell will work in a Mac.

I'm not saying they can't make an error...but they're sure to be more knowledgeable than the "random" e-Bay ram seller!
