I have an 08 duel qual 2.8 ghz mac pro, and I still have the standard 2gbs of memory on it. I want to upgrade and of course know Apple way over charges..I am thinking of adding either a 4gb to go to 6gbs or 8gb to go to 10 gbs. I do video editing for buisness, and some gaming for fun. What would be enough?

Where is the best places to buy memory for macs? What are the best brands that will play well with my machine?

Are really cheap brands like iram any good?

I have been reading that some brands dont work well with the Apple memory, so if u add 4gbs to your 2 gbs it will only recognize 4 is that true?

I don't have a huge budget for this but at the same time I don't want to cheap out and create problems that will cost me more in the long run. Thanks in advance!

Thanks dude! That still is pretty pricey but would this be just as good? It is 50 bucks cheaper, and Kingston is a pretty well known company no? I don't fully understand why that other worldly computing says they have official mac memory.

Yea, that Kingston appears to be right. It's PC6400 800MHz RAM

I wonder if you can mix 1GB, 2GB and 4GB sticks.
It says they have to be installed in pairs, so I would amuse it would work. Since you would have 2 matching pairs.

I spoke with Andy over at OWC/MacSales...

He said yes, you can run 2x4GB sticks along with your current 2x1GB sticks.
As long as they are "PC6400 800MHz" and in pairs.

He did how ever say...

You will also have to move the existing memory to other slots.
4GB sticks in top card numbers 1 & 2.
1GB sticks in bottom card, slots 1 & 2.

No problemo, glad I could help. I'm sure 10GB of ram will be a monster in that system.

I'm really Mac Pro envy, I would really love to have one in my lineup but for what I need, it's not worth it (yet). LOL
