Hello I was curious about the noise level on the powermac G5? Is it comparable to the mini? I see myself buying one very soon. However I need it to just shut up and not make its presence known like my lil mini.

The PowerMac has about 7 or 8 fans, while the mini has only one. And the G5 produces a lot more heat, especially in a dual G5.
Allthough it is not too noisy for such a powerfull system, it is of course not as silent as the mini.

But once you've heard the noise of a MDD G4, you'll find the G5 nearly silent...

The 2,5 & 2,7 G5's actually also have a water cooling system, so they might not be as noisy...

I haven't actually heard them yet though, so I can't say that for sure.

I would recommend the upper level aircooled Powermac G5, (the dual 2.3) only because I have heard that the watercooled models have some long-term issues. If you need the extra horsepower of the 2.5 or 2.7, then you won't be worried about noise. I will also say that the dual 2.3 is a very quiet machine except when running high-demand applications (even then it is more than tolerable.)

Anybody have a watercooled G5? Are the rumors true?

In order of noise these are my machines: (noisiest first)

XP2200 AMD self build.
Dome iMac G4 1Ghz
eMac G4 1Ghz
PowerMac G5 2Ghz Dual
Mini 1.42Ghz
12 inch iBook 1.2Ghz

The bottom 3 in that list are virtually silent compared to the top 3, I happily sleep next to my Mini and in the winter have slept next to the PowerMac.

Hope that helps.

You use your PowerMac as a heater in winter?!?
I heard that they get pretty warm, didn't know it would be that hot... :p

Very funny.

I meant that in the winter it is so quiet that I can sleep next to it, in the summer it was unbearably noisy at night, although in the day time I can't say I notice it, but I do have it working flat out all the time. (i.e both processors at 100%)

Maybe I am missing something...but I don't understand how the change of seasons affects the noise level??
Either way, I just tune my computers out. They are just white noise to me anymore.

Because its colder in winter, meaning the fans don't have to work so hard cooling down the processor. The summer is obviously a lot hotter and so the fans need to work harder.

I lived in the centre of London for a long, long time so I'm used to sleeping with any noise in the background. But since I've lived in the suburbs, I can have my windows wide open and still hear nothing at all (except from my pond trickling away), and in complete silence, the fan from any computer sounds like a 747 coming in for landing. So on hot nights I generally have to put my iBook to sleep when I want to sleep.

I guess that would make sense if you didn't have any sort of AC in the summer months or heat in the winter months. I have central air/heat so it is always 68 degrees Farenheit in my room year round. :biohazard

AC is virtually non-existant outside the US.
