I am looking at buying a Mac Pro soon so I am researching the different models. My question is most simply put...which model is the most "future proof" for it's current value?

I'm not that interested in how old the individual components may be (HD, GPU, RAM etc) I can replace and upgrade those as need be. What I am interested in knowing is about the models themselves...do the different motherboards restrict certain upgrades (ie. can a 1GB GPU be installed in a 1,1?). Basically, I want a Mac Pro that will last for several more years but I can't afford a 5,1. Thanks folks!

The higher the model number, the dearer the price. Pick the latest model that suits your pocket.

Well you can narrow things down pretty quickly. Eliminate the 2006 Mac Pro (1,1) since it's the oldest (and a used one you buy may have lots & lots of hours/use on it)....and eliminate the 2010 Mac Pro (4,1) since it's the newest & most expensive.

If you have a budget to stick to...then that might help to narrow things further.

My budget isn't strict per se...my main concern is if I buy a 1,1 or 2,1...will I be restricted in the hardware that I can put in it for upgrades (ie. a 1GB GPU).

The GPU cards for Mac Pro's can be a bit limiting. If you want to be able to use the latest & greatest graphics cards...the newer the Mac Pro the better.
