I download lots of tv shows and movies on itunes or streaming Hulu.
Lately download times can be horrendously long and then on another day, extremely fast.
I have an iMac 8,1 3.06 ghz 4 gb ram and use an ethernet from broadband modem through an air extreme.
I googled the problem and saw that this is a widespread problem.
I hope I'm not being redundant here.
Any info?

It may not be your computer...it could be your high-speed internet connection...especially if you have a cable modem setup.

Download speeds are nearly always attributable to the ISP, but it's not always easy to get something done about it. Meantime, try connecting to the modem via cable instead of airport to see if that improves things.

If you take up the matter of d/load speed with your ISP, be sure to have data to back your case. To do that, use Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test. Get samples of readings from different times of day, and try at least three test sessions per day.

thanks,
I have Roadrunner service, cable modem which goes to the Air Extreme. My imac is connected to the Extreme by ethernet. I have another mini mac in the house which goes Airport.
So it could be the cable company huh?
btw does a cordless phone setup in the same room cause any like problems?

Only if it's in operation at the same frequency and at the same time as your airport card.

Even if it isn't the exact same frequency, yes it can interfere if it's in very close proximity to the base station.

If the Internet is accessed solely over the wireless connection, it could also be an intermittent interference issue.

I would connect the machine to the wireless router using an Ethernet connection and see if the trouble persists. If it does not, you're likely having a problem with signal over your WiFi connection. If that's the case, I'd refer you to our Wireless Network FAQ:

Liquid and computers don't mix. It might seem simple, but we see an incredible amount of people post here about spills. Keep drinks and other liquids away from your expensive electronics!

yes, the phone is near that extreme station, but the Airport is for another computer which is possibly being affected, but the imac is an ethernet from the base station. I'll have to find another jack in another room for the cordless phone at any rate. thanks

I'll bet you might be able to tell me why old deleted itunes downloads are often qued (sp) up and loading if I don't take care to watch what's being downloaded. I often have to delete them each time i want to download a new show.
