Does anyone know if the Apple Remote works with VLC Media player? Also will it work with my iMac(27" iMac) period? Thanks!

Can't answer the VLC part, but it will control the iMac. I use it all the time with iTunes and Front Row.

According to the VideoLAN wiki, the Apple Remote works with VLC (since 0.8.6). Best way to find out what does and doesn't work is to try it.
